The couple’s almost six-decade marriage was evidence of their close relationship and mutual respect. Words cannot adequately express the affection we have had for more than sixty years. I appreciate your prayers and condolences.

Born in Nashville, Carl Dean had a company laying asphalt. Dean decided to live away from the limelight, preserving a secluded life that encouraged rumours about his existence despite his worldwide recognition of his wife. Once joked in a 1984 interview, “A lot of people say there’s no Carl Dean, that he’s just somebody I made up to keep other people off me.” Parton regularly tackled these rumours with humour.

The couple’s love affair started in 1964 when an 18-year-old Dolly Parton ran across Carl Dean outside of a Nashville laundry soon after arriving in the city. Attended only by Parton’s mother, the minister, and his wife, they married two years later, on May 30, 1966, in a secret ceremony in Ringgold, Georgia.

Particularly as the basis for her famous song “Jolene,” Dean’s effect on Parton’s music is clear. A bank teller who developed a love on Dean inspired the song; Parton would gently taunt Dean about his regular trips to the bank. She said in a 2008 interview, “She had this awful infatuation on my husband. And he simply enjoyed visiting the bank since she showed him so much attention.”

Just months before Dean’s death in December 2024, Parton revealed details about their lifelong marriage in a podcast interview. She credited their enduring marriage to their different personalities and common sense of humour, which enabled them to negotiate obstacles without protracted conflict. Parton stressed in their partnership the need for mutual respect and understanding.

On their 50th wedding anniversary, the couple rekindled their vows; Parton expressed her want to have a real wedding dress—something she missed on their first ceremony. “We’re going to get married again,” she said in People magazine at the time. Since I didn’t have a huge, lengthy wedding dress when we were married, I will have a lovely one.

Carl Dean’s siblings, Sandra and Donnie, survive him. Respecting Dean’s lifetime inclination for seclusion, a private burial service with closest relatives is scheduled.
